Dr. Trevor Smith appointed Chair of ISO Technical Committee for Quality Management

Toronto, ON - The Standards Council of Canada (SCC) and the Canadian Standards Association (CSA) are pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Trevor Smith as the new Chair of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) TC 176, Quality Management and Quality Assurance.

Toronto, ON - The Standards Council of Canada (SCC) and the Canadian Standards Association (CSA) are pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Trevor Smith as the new Chair of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) TC 176, Quality Management and Quality Assurance.

ISO/TC 176 is the committee under which the ISO 9000 series of quality management system standards are developed.  It is the premiere ISO Technical Committee, with over eighty ISO member countries and forty-six international liaison organizations.

As the Canadian member body of ISO, SCC co-ordinates Canada's participation in over 300 ISO technical committees and subcommittees.  SCC also holds the secretariat for a number of these committees including ISO/TC 176.  CSA manages the secretariat of ISO/TC 176 on behalf of the SCC.

Dr. Trevor Smith began his career at Kodak Limited in England in 1973 after earning Bachelor and Doctorate degrees in Chemistry from the University of Southampton.  Dr. Smith held technology development and technical production roles in Kodak Limited before moving to Kodak Canada Inc. in 1977.  In recent years, he has devoted more time to quality assurance activities through technical supervisory and management roles as well as development of the Kodak Six Sigma program. Dr. Smith's term runs through 2007.

He succeeds Dr. Pierre Caillibot, who concludes his successful mandate at the end of June 2002.

In 1991 Dr. Smith was appointed to the position of Quality Assurance Manager for Kodak Canada, Manufacturing.  Kodak Canada achieved its quality system registration to ISO 9001 in 1992. In December 1997, Dr. Smith became Director, Quality for Kodak Canada, and currently holds this position as well as manufacturing responsibilities.  In addition to his these activities, Dr. Smith manages product development projects and has been a corporate advisor for environmental and chemistry-related topics supported by government research and development incentives.

In 1992 he joined the CSA Technical Committee on Environmental Management, and subsequently became a Canadian delegate to ISO/TC 207 (Environmental Management Systems).  In 1998 Dr. Smith was appointed as a liaison delegate from ISO/TC 207 to ISO/TC 176 to strengthen compatibility between the ISO 14001 and ISO 9001 standards.

His current interests include business process management, integrated supply chain management, and management system development for quality, material flow, and health, safety and the environment.  Dr. Smith is a member of the Royal Society of Chemistry, APICS, and the American Society for Quality.
