International standards key for promoting energy efficiency and renewable energy sources

In his opening speech to delegates of the World Energery Congress (WEC)  in Rome, Italy, European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso declared energy and climate change as the most important issues affecting global security and development. With a central theme of "The energy future in an interdependent world," the Congress also featured a session on the role of international standards, which included an overview of the key role that standards can play in supporting the development and promotion of energy efficiency and renewable energy sources.
