Making IT office equipment friendlier for the elderly and disabled

A new international standard aims to make office equipment more user-friendly for elderly and disabled persons. A joint collaboration between the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) and International Organization for Standardization (ISO), the standard (ISO/IEC 10779:2008 Information technology – Office equipment accessibility guidelines for elderly persons and persons with disability), provides specifications to be used during the planning, development and design of office equipment. Typical office equipment includes copy machines, printers, scanners and fax machines.  From guidelines on the actual operation of the technology, to the equipment’s display, ISO/IEC 10779:2008 strives to help anyone with a physical limitation improve his or her ability to use office equipment without external help.
