FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: 1998-04-17

Linda Lusby appointed Standards Council chair

Office of the Executice Director

It is my pleasure to inform you that Ms. Linda Lusby, a specialist in resource management and environmental policy, has been appointed Chair of the Standards Council of Canada, effective April 4. Ms Lusby, Associate Professor and Coordinator, Environmental Science, at Acadia University, is known for the leadership and vision she has contributed to a wide variety of standardization initiatives.

Ms. Lusby was first appointed to the Standards Council as Vice-Chair in 1996. She played a key role in the development of the organization's current three-year strategic plan, and in her new position, will be instrumental in its realization.

Since February 1997, Ms. Lusby has chaired the advisory group studying whether the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) should develop a standard in the area of privacy and the protection of personal information. She is also active in ISO's Consumer Policy Committee (COPOLCO) and contributes to the ISO Technical Committees on air quality (TC 146) and water quality (TC 147).

Ms. Lusby has served on the Boards of Directors of the Canadian Standards Association (CSA) and the Quality Management Institute (QMI), as well as steering committees and technical committees of the Canadian General Standards Board (CGSB) and CSA.

In 1996, Ms Lusby was selected for participation in the Leadership in Environment and Development (LEAD) program, which prepares tomorrow's leaders to meet the challenge of managing the transition to a sustainable economy. She will complete her two-year training program in May of this year and will become a LEAD fellow.

Ms. Lusby holds degrees from Mount Saint Vincent University, the University of Alberta and Dalhousie University.

She replaces Richard Lafontaine, who served as President and subsequently Chair of the Standards Council, starting in 1994. I trust you will join me in wishing her success in her new duties.
