Standards Council of Canada Rewards Contributions to Quality

Ottawa - The Standards Council of Canada announced the recipient of the 2000 Jean P. Carrière Award today. Dr. Pierre F. Caillibot receives the award in recognition of more than 25 years of outstanding national and international leadership in standardization, in the fields of quality management and quality assurance. Dr. Caillibot will be presented with the award at a reception to be held in his honour this evening.

The Jean P. Carrière Award has been conferred by the Standards Council of Canada since 1979, to individuals who have made a distinguished contribution to standardization. The award is given in recognition of outstanding service to national and international standardization in honour of the late Brigadier-General Jean P. Carrière. It was under his presidency of the Standards Council from October 1971 to December 1977, that the architecture of the National Standards System was largely developed.

Since 1997, Dr. Caillibot has established Canada as a leader in international standardization through his position as Chair of the International Organization for Standardization's technical committee on quality management and quality assurance (ISO/TC 176). This committee is responsible for the influential ISO 9000 series of standards.

"Canada has a high degree of credibility in standardization. This is the result of good structures and approaches, and of the work of many dedicated people, over many years," remarked Dr. Caillibot. "Thanks to the support of Hydro-Québec, I have been privileged to be associated to this field which benefits all Canadians and contributes to improving our world."

In his former role as Chair of the Canadian National Committee for ISO (CNC/ISO), he oversaw the redevelopment of the committee in order to concentrate its efforts on standards issues having a significant effect on the Canadian economy. He has worked on a number of Canadian and international technical committees, work groups, task groups and organizations dealing with a variety of quality related issues.

His contributions in the field of quality have also been celebrated through the presentation of the Canadian Standards Association (now CSA International) Award of Merit in 1998, and an Award of Merit from the business community and Premier of Quebec in 1990.

Dr. Caillibot's work has advanced standardization and quality management in Canada and internationally. He is now President of Accademia Qualitas, a training firm in the field of management systems. His dedication to standardization serves as an example for all in the National Standards System.

The Standards Council of Canada is the federal Crown corporation that oversees the National Standards System, an effort involving some 15,000 Canadians who take part in the development of Canadian and international standards, as well as over 270 organizations involved in assessing conformity to standards.
