Past-Chair of SCC Appointed President of COPANT

OTTAWA - The Standards Council of Canada (SCC) is pleased to announce that Linda Lusby, Past Chair of the Standards Council has accepted the position of President for the Pan American Standards Commission, also known as COPANT. The Standards Council represents Canada internationally as an active member of COPANT.

Ms. Lusby, a specialist in resource management and environmental policy, was Chair of the Standards Council of Canada from April 1998 until her term ended April 3, 2001. She was first appointed to the Standards Council as Vice-Chair in 1996. Ms. Lusby is an Associate Professor of Environmental Science at Acadia University in Wolfville, Nova Scotia, where she served as Assistant Dean for Environmental Science until 1999.

Ms. Lusby has proudly represented Canada domestically and abroad in a variety of standards-related areas. She has extensive experience in international standardization as Chair of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) - Technical Management Board (TMB) Ad Hoc Committee on Privacy and as a member of ISO's TMB and Council. She has also been active in the Consumers' Association of Canada and in the ISO Committee on Consumer Policy (COPOLCO). Her new role as COPANT's President is a two-year term appointment.

Ms. Lusby holds degrees in Home Economics, Science and Law from Mount Saint Vincent University, the University of Alberta and Dalhousie University. She is currently completing PhD studies in Environmental Policy (Law) and Management at the T.H. Huxley School, Imperial College of Science, Technology and Medicine, London England.

COPANT is a civil, non-profit association that promotes the development of technical standardization and related activities in its 31 member countries. Each of these member countries participates in an effort to facilitate co-operation in social, industrial, scientific and technological development. COPANT devises standards of interest to countries that have not been developed by recognized international agencies.

The Standards Council of Canada is the federal Crown corporation that oversees Canada's National Standards System. The Standards Council coordinates the contributions of Canadians to domestic and international voluntary standards development and conformity assessment activities.
