Standards Council of Canada Honours Outstanding Contributions to Standardization

OTTAWA - The Standards Council of Canada today announced the winners of their newly expanded Awards Program at a celebration held yesterday evening at the Château Mont Sainte-Anne Resort and Convention Centre in Quebec.

"Standards are a vital part of our economic growth and a foundation for progress and innovation," commented Industry Minister Allan Rock. "Canada's prominence on the world's standards scene is due in part to the dedication, commitment and outstanding work of these Canadians."

Six new awards were introduced and presented to individuals and organizations that have significantly contributed to the National Standards System and to Canada's national and international standardization efforts. An Awards Selection Committee of the Standards Council selected the winners.

The long-standing Jean P. Carrière Award, first introduced in 1969, was presented to Margaret Soper in recognition of her distinguished contributions to standardization in Canada. Mrs. Soper has been a volunteer with the Standards Council since 1988, and has served in a number of leadership roles. Currently, she is a member of the Consumer and Public Interest Committee and the Canadian Advisory Committee to COPOLCO, ISO's committee on consumer policy.

The Standards Council also paid tribute to Mr. Roy A. Phillips, a well-known Canadian leader in international standardization, by naming an award in his honour. The newly established Roy A. Phillips Award salutes individuals whose contributions have helped Canada become recognized as a world leader in international standardization.

The first recipient of the Roy Phillips A. Award is Reginald Shaughnessy. Mr. Shaughnessy has been a volunteer in steel, health, safety and quality committees for 42 years. He is currently chair of the Canadian Standards Association's steering committee on business management, and has served as international chair of the technical committee that developed the ISO 9000 series of quality management standards.

The Corporate Commitment Award went to the Department of National Defence's Directorate of Quality Assurance, or DQA, for their quality and environmental management contributions to Canadian and foreign governments. John Dunn, received the Leadership Award which recognizes notable contributions made by the chair or convenor of an advisory or technical committee. The Distinguished Service Award was presented to Ahmad Husseini who has played a pivotal role in the development of international environmental management standards (ISO 14000). The Award of Excellence, introduced to recognize notable contributions made by a committee member, went to Leonard Adrian. Jane Legault who provides support services to volunteers in the certification program was this year's recipient of the Dedicated Service Award.

The Standards Council of Canada, a federal crown corporation, plays a leading role in international standardization bodies such as the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). Through their Volunteer Program, the Standards Council provides hundreds of Canadians with the opportunity to contribute to the work of these organizations at both the technical and policy levels. The Standards Council also coordinates and oversees the efforts of the National Standards System and offers a variety of other standardization-related programs and services.
