In memory of Derek Stevenson

OTTAWA-It is with great sorrow and regret that the Standards Council of Canada (SCC) announces the tragic loss of esteemed colleague, Derek Stevenson, Staff writer and editor of Consensus magazine.

In his 39th year, Derek passed away peacefully at the Ottawa Heart Institute on September 12, 2002 surrounded by his family and close friends.

Derek joined the SCC in 1996. During his career at the Standards Council, he worked on countless stories, speeches and news articles, bringing to life and making accessible the complex world of standardization. On an annual basis, Derek was responsible for the production of the annual report and Consensus magazine. He is remembered for his quick wit, his writing talent, vast knowledge of standardization and the tremendous contribution he made to the SCC and the National Standards System. Prior to joining the Standards Council, Derek worked with the Housing Innovation Division of the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation and with Canadian Consumer Magazine. He was a graduate of the Carleton University School of Journalism, Honours Program.

Visitation will be held at the Darte Funeral Home, 585 Carleton Street, St. Catharines, Ontario on Monday, 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. A private family funeral will follow.

A Celebration of Derek's life will be held in Ottawa at a date to be announced. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Coronary Care Unit of the Ottawa Heart Institute, Civic Campus.

Derek was greatly respected at the Standards Council by council members and staff. He will be sadly missed by all his many colleagues and friends.
