Paralympian to join NSS team in honouring award recipients

OTTAWA — The Standards Council of Canada (SCC) is pleased to announce that Canadian Paralympic Champion Lori Radke will be the guest speaker at the upcoming SCC Awards Ceremony, to be held in conjunction with the 2nd National Standards System (NSS) Conference.

"We are honoured to have Lori Radke join us as we pay tribute to the recipients of the 2004 awards," said Peter Clark, Executive Director of the Standards Council. "Her story of will and determination is proof that ordinary people can achieve extraordinary things."

Ms. Radke will provide a glimpse into the journey that took her from rural Alberta to locales around the world, including three Paralympic Games with the National Women's Wheelchair Basketball Team. She will describe her decision to pursue competitive wheelchair basketball after severe knee injuries during her adolescence left her unable to play stand-up sports. Team work, resolve, and hard work have resulted in two gold medals at the Paralympics and a bronze medal from the 2004 Games in Athens, Greece.

Much like any team, the success of National Standards System is built on the cooperation and commitment of each participant.  The SCC believes in acknowledging the achievements of its members through a series of awards that recognize their invaluable contributions to standards-related activities. The 2004 recipients will be honoured at an Awards ceremony to be held on the evening of Tuesday, November 16, 2004 at The Palliser Hotel, in Calgary, Alberta.

The Standards Council of Canada is a Crown corporation that promotes efficient and effective voluntary standardization in Canada. It oversees the National Standards System (NSS) in which some 15,000 individuals participate in standards-development and advisory committees and operates a variety of standardization-related programs and services.  For more information on the SCC, including the Awards Program and the NSS Conference, visit www.scc.ca or email [email protected].
