Standards Council of Canada renames award

OTTAWA— The Standards Council of Canada (SCC) announced today that it has changed the name of its Dedicated Service Award to the McMahon Dedicated Service Award, in memory of former SCC colleague and staff member Joseph McMahon (1966-2004).

The McMahon Dedicated Service Award recognizes notable contributions made by an SCC staff member towards the work of technical committees, sub-committees, working groups, task groups and/or the National Standards System (NSS).

“Joe is remembered for his generous and collaborative spirit” said Peter Clark, Executive Director of the SCC. “He really personified the very attributes this award recognizes.”

A special presentation of the McMahon Dedicated Service Award will be made on the evening of November 16, 2004 during the National Standards System (NSS) Conference Awards ceremony at The Palliser Hotel, in Calgary, Alberta.

During his career at the Standards Council, which began in 1996, Joseph McMahon worked in many areas of the organization including as part of the Executive team, with External Relations and in the Standards Branch. Joe served as Secretary of the Canadian National Committee on the International Organization for Standardization (CNC/ISO). He was responsible for coordinating Canada's participation at ISO and in the Pacific Area Standards Congress (PASC).

The Standards Council of Canada is a Crown corporation that promotes efficient and effective voluntary standardization in Canada. It oversees the National Standards System (NSS) in which some 15,000 individuals participate in standards-development and advisory committees and operates a variety of standardization-related programs and services.
