Asset Publisher FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: 2007-10-02 Local contribution by standards community emphasizes international commitment to societyAs a tribute to the international 2007 World Standards Day, the Standards Council of Canada (SCC) has committed to building hampers for various worthy charities in the Ottawa region. The SCC has invited its partners, stakeholders, and the community to participate in the collection of items, and to join SCC staff on October 15th as they assemble the care packages. "Standardization contributes a great deal to society—from the air we breathe to the products we use—our everyday lives are affected by hundreds of thousands of standards," explains Peter Clark, Executive Director of the SCC. "This event is another way for the standards community to honour its commitment to society by making a local contribution to those in our community who need it most." The Standards Council is currently accepting donations of non-perishable food items, cash and/or new or gently used unwrapped items such as: toys, games, books, clothing, hats, scarves, puzzles, stuffed animals, gift certificates, etc. For anyone wishing to make a contribution, a drop box is located in SCC’s reception area, at 270 Albert Street, Suite 200, Ottawa, Ontario. Items are being accepted until October 15th. Celebrated annually on October 14th, by the international standardization community, World Standards Day is intended to raise awareness around the globe of the importance of standards-related activities. The 2007 theme, "Standards and the citizen: Contributing to Society", emphasizes the role that standards and conformity assessment play in the economic development and social progress of the citizens of this planet. The Standards Council of Canada is a Crown corporation with the mandate to promote efficient and effective use of voluntary standardization. It is Canada's representative to the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). As the coordinator of the National Standards System, SCC facilitates the development and use of the standards and accreditation services that enhance Canada’s competitiveness and social well-being.
