National conference encourages students to be "Standards-Smart"

As part of the 2008 National Standards System (NSS) Conference, the Standards Council of Canada (SCC) will be holding a student poster-competition for school-aged children (grades 3 to 6) from Newfoundland and Labrador’s Eastern School District.

Whether they realize it or not, Canadians encounter hundreds of standards everyday. At home, at work, at school and at play, standards contribute to the high quality of life that we have come to expect. The 2008 NSS Student Poster Competition encourages students and teachers to learn about standards by asking them to consider what standards mean to them and their community.  The deadline for submissions is May 5th, 2008.

The Conference organizers will select 20 entries to be showcased during the Conference, with top prizes to be presented as part of a luncheon being held at the Fairmont Newfoundland on Wednesday, June 4th, 2008.

On behalf of the poster competition winners, $5 from each NSS Conference registration will be donated to the School Lunch Association. Interested parties are invited and encouraged to match the SCC's contribution.

"A nutritious meal is the standard that every child deserves.  It improves attendance in school, leads to higher grades and, most importantly, enriches self-esteem and self-confidence," noted Gerry Colbert, Executive Director for the School Lunch Association. "On behalf of the students who benefit from the school lunch program, I would like to thank the members of the National Standards System for their contribution to our program."

The 2008 National Standards System (NSS) Conference will take place at the Fairmont Newfoundland in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador from June 2–4, 2008.The event will bring together delegates from across the country to examine the role for standardization in an evolving world. Participants will have the opportunity to explore the impact of emerging global dynamics—from advances in technology to environmental concerns, and other societal factors.

The Standards Council of Canada is a Crown corporation with the mandate to promote efficient and effective voluntary standardization in Canada. As coordinator of Canada’s National Standards System, SCC oversees the efforts of those organizations and individuals involved in standards-related development and implementation activities, both at home and abroad.
