Stephen Cross to lead SCC Conformity Assessment

Ottawa, Ontario (December 17th, 2009)—The Standards Council of Canada (SCC) is pleased to announce the appointment of Stephen Cross to the position of Director, Conformity Assessment.

"I am delighted that Stephen has accepted this important role. His experience, abilities and knowledge are great assets to the Conformity Assessment branch, and to the SCC as a whole," said John Walter, SCC’s Executive Director.

Mr. Cross began his career at the SCC as a Senior Program Officer for product certification accreditation, and became a Program Manager within the branch shortly thereafter.

As director, replacing Pat Paladino who has retired from SCC, Stephen Cross is responsible for the leadership of SCC’s conformity assessment programs, including the accreditation of calibration and testing laboratories, product and service certification bodies, medical laboratories, management systems, personnel, and inspection bodies, as well as greenhouse gas validation and verification bodies.

Before joining the SCC, Mr. Cross was technical manager for Environmental Choice, a product certification program that leads to Canada’s eco-label. He also worked as a technical underwriter in the commercial insurance industry, which involved applying Quality Management principles to manage risk. His studies include a bachelor’s degree in bio-chemistry, and a Master of Business Administration from McGill University, as well as a master’s degree in Environmental Studies from York University.
