Resolution 1: Approval of JTC 1/SC 34 Chairman
JTC 1/SC 34 approves Dr. James Mason as Chairman of JTC 1/SC 34 for a three-year term of office ending with the 2002 JTC 1/SC 34 Meeting.
Resolution 2: Approval of WG Conveners and Terms of Reference
JTC 1/SC 34 approves the following WG Conveners and Terms of Reference:
WG 1: Markup Languages
Convener: Charles Goldfarb
Terms of Reference:
SC34/WG1 is responsible for information description languages, principally the Standard Generalized Markup Language (SGML) and auxiliary standards relating to SGML subsets, APIs, testing, and registration.
- SGML (ISO 8879)
- SDIF (ISO 9069)
- Registration Procedures for SGML Public Identifiers (ISO 9070)
- Technical Reports TR 9573
- Conformance Testing for SGML System (DIS 13673)
- APIs for document processing
WG 2: Information Presentation

Terms of Reference:
SC34/WG2 should perform its activities on the following scope and terms of reference:
To produce standards for languages and resources for the description and processing of compound and hypermedia documents, including:
- Document processing architecture and formatting for logical documents
- Multilingual font information interchange and related services
- Final-form document architecture and page information interchange
- APIs for the above document processings.
WG 3: Information Association

Terms of Reference:
SC34/WG3 shall perform its activities within the following scope and terms of reference:
To produce standard architectures for information management and interchange based on ISO 8879 Standard Generalized Markup Language and related standards, including but not limited to:
- information linking and addressing
- time-based information management
- representation of knowledge structures, indexes, etc.
- management of behavioural components in interactive documents

Resolution 5: Approval of Program of Work, Target Dates and Project Editor Assignments
JTC 1/SC 34 approves the Program of Work, Target Dates and Project Editor Assignments contained in SC 34 N 49, as revised at its Plenary.
Resolution 6: Cancellation of Projects
JTC 1/SC 34 cancels the following project and requests that the SC 34 Secretariat remove it from the Program of Work:

Resolution 7: Approval of New Work Item Proposal
SC34 approves the New Work Item Proposal for Product Data Markup Language, SC34 N81 and transmits it to JTC1 for processing. SC 34 expects this project to be developed jointly with TC184/SC4, with editors from each group.
Resolution 8: Endorsement of WG Recommendations
JTC 1/SC 34 endorses the WG1, WG 2, and WG 3 Reports and Recommendations approved at the April 1999 Working Group meetings in Granada, Spain.
Resolution 9: JTC 1/SC 34 Future Meetings
SC 34 approves the following tentative meeting schedule:

Resolution 10: Position Papers for JTC1
SC34 requests that David Abrahamson and Roger Price draft a position paper on the issues of ownership of text, copyright, and access to texts and that Jerry Smith draft a position paper on the issues of collaboration with other organizations, particularly as it affects ownership of and access to texts. These documents should be distributed to the SC34 Chairman and Working Group Convenors over the course of the summer for the purpose of completing texts that can be submitted to the JTC1 Plenary.

SC 34 expresses its appreciation to the Graphic Communications Association for hosting the Second SC 34 Plenary Meeting in Granada, Spain.
Resolution A2: Appreciation to SC 34 Chairman
JTC1/SC 34 thanks Dr. Jim Mason, the SC 34 Chairman, for the leadership and support he provided at the SC 34 meeting.

JTC1/SC 34 thanks its drafting committee, consisting of Yushi Komachi, Doris Bernardini and Marisa Topping for their effort in developing the SC 34 resolutions.
