Response to the Final AFII Liaison Statement concerning ISO/IEC 10036
The proposed topic should be discussed in the separate issues: glyph registration and ISO/IEC 10036.
1. Glyph Registration
Being independent of the volume increase in Unicode or ISO/IEC 10646, the concept of glyph and its registration are valid and meaningful. East Asian countries, in particular, have actually a strong requirement for registration of their glyphs.
A trade organization will not surely provide fund for glyph registration. The future registration of glyphs should be carried out as a full volunteer work supported by a semi-automatic procedure.
Instead of AFII or Unicode consortium, such a registration activity could be taken by a Japanese organization which has an interest in glyph registration.
2. ISO/IEC 10036
ISO/IEC 10036 should not be discussed from only the glyph registration's point of view. The standard specifies the registration of objects:
- glyphs
- glyph collections
- font attribute sets
- glyph index maps
- font reference font specifications
The related standards such as ISO/IEC 9541, ISO/IEC 9070 and ISO/IEC 10180 refer to ISO/IEC 10036. The ISO/IEC 10036 is worth while being in the SC34 standards architecture.
Therefore ISO/IEC 10036 should be confirmed still in the forthcoming periodic review of the standard.
