Title: Comments on ISO/IEC DIS 26300 Source: Keld Simonsen Date: 2006-06-14 Status: expert contribution As suggested by the SC 34 secretary at the recent plenary in Seoul, I am hereby forwarding some comments on the ISO/IEC DIS 26300 ballot. These are my own comments and they have no official status. The comments are just provided for information, as several people at the plenary said it would be helpful to them. Comments: 1. the standard should be foramtted according to ISO standards. Headers and footers need to be in ISO/IEC style. 2. Page 2: A note on patents: A note should also be given that potential claims on copyrights should be sent to both the ISO and the IEC central offices, that both maintain patent claims on ISO and IEC standards respectively. 3. We propose that the resulting IS be made freely available, as the OASIS standard is freely available. 4. We propose that the standard be maintained in a joint work of OASIS and ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 34. We propose a model for cooperation as has been employed for the POSIX standards, as documented in ISO/IEC JTC 1 /SC 34 N 0587 http://www.jtc1sc34.org/repository/0587.pdf 5. The clauses should follow JTC 1 directives so there is a clause 1. Scope, Clause 2. Normative references, clause 3 terms and definitions, clause 4 Conformance. 6. For now, the technical contents of the standard should be unchanged. But for later revisions of the standard, it should be possible to make technical changes from national bodies via the ISO process. The procedures proposed in comment 4 ensures that this can be done, so that the resulting standard be exactly the same both in OASIS and in ISO/IEC. Else there is a risk that the ISO standard and the OASIS standard will differ, and that is not to the advantage of the standard nor to the implementors and users of the standard.
